HAITI 2010 IN DETAIL ... Fellowship members began planning for the 2010 trip in early 2009, making arrangements to travel to Gonaives in February; however, the earthquake which devastated the country in mid January compelled the Fellowship to delay the 2010 trip.
A total of 20 members, 10 from southern Ohio area churches and 10 from Oak Park Christian Church in California traveled to Haiti in late October (see below).
Each member assumes the responsibility of paying the cost of his or her airline travel, transportation in country, and food, which allows all funds raised by the group to be designated for project work.
PROJECT The group will continue the work its started in 2009, when Fellowship members added a 42'x106' roof to a church. This year, they intend to finish work on a bathroom, to install a water system, and to complete various painting projects.
FUNDING As explained in the Project Notes at left, the cost of completing church repairs is an estimated $13,000.
CURRENT FUNDING LEVEL ... As of Oct. 1, the group had raised approximately $13,000 toward the 2010 project. |

PROJECT: CHURCH BUILDING MAINTENANCE & IMPROVEMENTS
GONAIVES, HAITI / Late October 2010
A team of 20 Christian Missionary Fellowship members, 10 from southern Ohio area churches and 10 from Oak Park Christian Church in California, traveled to Haiti in late October to complete interior and exterior improvements to Sainsurin Baptiste's 4,000-square-feet church in Gonaives. By God's grace, the building was not damaged during the mid January earthquake that devastated much of the country. While in Gonaives, missionaries also completed a roof repair before traveling to various locations throughout the countryside to assess needs and evaluate projects for future trips.

| | | | | | | | | INTERIOR PAINTING
Much-needed cosmetic improvements were a major initiative: Using a total of 97 gallons of paint, CMF members painted the interior of the 4,000-square-feet church. |
| | | | | | PEW CONSTRUCTION
The Fellowship provided funding for the construction of 40 pews in Baptiste’s church as well as for other surrounding churches. |
| | | | | | AISLE WORK
Because the new church was built on the site of the former, a gap existed due to the expanded foundation. To rectify the issue, workers prepped the gap and filled it with concrete to match the existing floor. |

| | | | | | EXTERIOR WORK
The Fellowship routinely relies on Haitian workers to assist it in completing large-scale projects in a short period of time.
Flashback ... Not quite two years ago, the church picutred below greeted missionaries when they arrived in Gonaives to complete the roof project in early February 2009.

| | GRAY WATER COLLECTION
Due to the lack of a public sanitation system and standards for managing the same, sewage disposal poses a significant challenge for all of Gonaives and exposes its citizenry to the health risks associated with raw sewage draining from households and businesses into open trenches lining the streets. Fellowship members and Baptiste opted to dig a cesspool to collect gray water from the church – an option available to many Haitians, but one that few can afford.
To begin, a hole is dug and lined with rocks. |
| | | | | | GRAY WATER COLLECTION
Once the hole is prepared, an above-ground base is built over which a concrete cover will be placed. |
| | | | | | CONCRETE ASSEMBLY LINE
Concrete to pour the cesspool cover is transported to the back of the church assembly line-style using five-gallon buckets. |
| | | | | | CESSPOOL COVER PREPARATION
Missionaries pour the cover one five-gallon bucket of concrete at a time. |
| | | | | | SANITATION PROJECTS COMPLETE
In addition to building a cesspool for the Gonaives church, missionaries build a second collection point for another area church affiliated with White Fields Missionary Society, an organization that specializes in providing collaborative start-up support to pastors planting local churches among their own people in other parts of the world. The Fellowship identified a need at the Gonaives-area church during its February 2009 trip and made a commitment to build the sanitation system during its next trip. |
| | | | | | ROOF MAINTENANCE
Upon learning the 4,000-square-feet roof put onto the building during the 2009 missionary trip leaked, missionaries made plans to make needed repairs during the 2010 trip. |
| | | | | | ROOF MAINTENANCE
Tethered to the roof by ropes, missionaries remove the sheeting and relap the roof, adding 24 sheets and placing sealer between each to prevent a reoccurrence of the problem. |
| | | | | | ROOF MAINTENANCE
The heat of the mid-afternoon Haitian sun did not deter missionaries from their work. |
